USEFUL TERMS TO KNOW

  • Ambrosia - the food of the gods, usually presented in small golden squares. Ambrosia is able to cure almost any injury but is lethal to mortals. Demigods should only use them in case of emergency; an extreme overdose of ambrosia can burn the demigod to ashes.

  • Achilles - the mightiest of the Greek demigods who fought in the Trojan War.

  • Amazons - a nation of all-female warriors. They run Amazon.com from a large warehouse and are currently ruled by Queen Otrera.

  • Camp Half-Blood is a secret training facility and sanctuary for young Greek demigods around the world. It is located on the northern shore of Long Island Sound in Nassau County.

  • Celestial bronze - a bronze metal formed by the god Hephaestus, and is used as the weapon of choice for Greek heroes. It can kill immortals and monsters, but is harmless to mortals. Hephaestus kids forge weapons of Celestial bronze for themselves and other demigods.

  • Centaur - a race of creatures that are half human, half horse.

  • Cerberus - the three-headed dog that guards the gates ofthe Underworld.

  • Charon - the ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the deceased across the rivers Styx and Acheron.

  • Cyclops - a member of a primordial race of giants with a single eye in the middle of his or her forehead. Plural: Cyclopes.

  • Demigod - a human/god hybrid who has one godly parent and one human parent.

  • Determined is a term describing a demigod who is recognized to be an offspring of a particular god. The process is called 'claiming'. Demigods must be claimed on or before their thirteenth birthday.

  • Drachma - the coin of ancient Greece. In series, these are gold.

  • Elysium - the final resting place of the souls of heroes in the Underworld.

  • Erebos - a place of darkness between Earth and Hades.

  • Fields of Asphodel - the section of the Underworld where the souls of people who lived lives of equal good and evil rest.

  • Fields of Punishment - the section of the Underworld where evil souls are eternally tortured.

  • First Titan War - the first war between the Olympians and the Titans. Also known as the first Titanomachy.

  • Gaia - the earth goddess; mother of Titans, giants, Cyclopes, and other monsters.

  • Gorgons - Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa. Three monstrous sisters who have hair of living, venomous snakes. Medusa's eyes can turn the beholder to stone.

  • Half-Blood - a commonly-used slang term for a demigod.

  • Harpy - a winged female creature that snatches things and is known for attacking demigods. Harpies clean the cabins at the end of the summer at Camp Half-Blood.

  • Iris message - Commonly referred to as an IM. A type of video message that can be used to communicate with others by using a rainbow. To communicate with the other, the caller must first create mist so a rainbow can be formed. The caller holds one golden drachma, clearly recites "Oh Iris, goddess of the Rainbow, accept my offering", throws the drachma into the rainbow, and then states the name of the intended receiver or location. The caller or receiver can end the Iris message by scattering the mist, disrupting the signal.

  • Gold - a metal that is fatal to immortals and half-blood mortals, but it is harmless to humans. It is the weapon of choice for Roman legionnaires. The metal was consecrated in ancient times at the Pantheon in Rome. Its existence was a closely guarded secret of the emperors.

  • The Mist - a type of magic or force that prevents mortals from seeing creatures, places or people from Greek Mythology, such as gods and heroes, and instead they see things that they would find normal.

  • Nectar is the liquid form of ambrosia, the food of the gods. It has the same effects on demigods and immortals as ambrosia, and tastes like the drinker's favorite and most comforting drink.

  • The Oracle - the spirit of the Oracle of Delphi, whose spirit is passed down through a host of humans. Currently, the Oracle is hosted by Rachel Elizabeth Dare, a mortal who can see through the Mist.

  • Riptide - a 3-foot-long magical sword made of celestial bronze, currently in the possession of Percy Jackson. It takes the form of a ballpoint pen (that reads "Anaklusmos" - Greek for Riptide on the side) when not in use. The sword is enchanted to reappear in Percy's pocket as a pen if he loses contact with the sword. However, the sword doesn't return if Percy doesn't have pockets. Riptide was forged by ZoĆ« Nightshade and originally took the form of a hair clip, and was originally owned by Herakles.

  • River Styx - the river that forms the boundary between Earth and the Underworld.

  • Stygian Iron - a metal which can kill monsters and possibly mortals. When forged, it is cooled in the River Styx, making it indestructible. It is implied that only people of the underworld can wield Stygian Iron weapons.

  • Tartarus - husband of Gaea; spirit of the abyss; father of the giants; also the lowest region of the world.

  • Thanatos - the Greek god of death.

  • Undetermined - a term describing a demigod that has not yet been claimed as the offspring of a particular god.
