CAMP JUPITER

"Aut vincere aut mori. Conquer or Die.
–Lupa, about the way that Camp Jupiter is run

Praetors: Jason Grace and Reyna Avila Ramirez-Arellano
Centurions: Annie Cresta (I), Gale Hawthorne (V)

Welcome to Camp Jupiter! Or, at least, welcome to what's left of it.

Camp Jupiter was a training facility in the Bay Area of California for demigods of the Roman Pantheon. It was founded sometime after the shift of the center of Western Civilization to America, and was always located on the West Coast, as the East was considered 'bad luck' by the Romans.

Camp Jupiter was hidden from the Greek camp, Camp Half-Blood, for a number of years following the American Civil War due to Greek/Roman rivalries, wars and bloodshed. The gods weaved a thick Mist shield that would prevent any outside campers from finding the other camp unless they were meant to find it by the Gods - hence how the Romans were able to find Camp Half-Blood in our plot. The Romans still honor this rivalry to this day, and many attendees of Camp Jupiter have little respect for Greek demigods - a common term of disdain among Roman demigods is to call someone a Graecus - meaning 'Greek'.

For those Greek demigods who are used to things being done a certain way at Camp Half-Blood, the more militaristic, disciplined ways of Camp Jupiter can be quite jarring. Thus, we've created this article to explain to you how things worked there.

NEW ROME

Camp Jupiter was part of New Rome, a community flanked by the Little Tiber River in the Berkeley Hills of California. The city was made up of former legionnaires of Camp Jupiter - campers must serve at the camp for ten years in order to be eligible to live in New Rome. Once there, the city provided protection from monsters for demigods as well as their families and children. Weapons were not allowed in New Rome, and this law was strictly enforced by Terminus, the god of boundaries, who protected the city via the Pomerian Line.

The city echoed Ancient Rome architecturally and structurally - all buildings were made of white marble with red tiled roofs, and there were even replicas of the Circus Maximus and Coliseum. In the city, one could find shops, dining, places to work, and even schools and universities - all populated by the demigods, legacies, and nature spirits who lived there.

THE JOURNEY

The way demigods get to Camp Jupiter, regardless of whether they'd lived in New Rome beforehand or not, is much different and much more brutal than their Greek counterpart.

Roman demigods bound for Camp Jupiter wake up alone in front of the Wolf House, where Lupa, Roman goddess of wolves live. Inside the Wolf House, Lupa and her pack decide if a demigod is worthy of training. If they're not, Lupa's pack devours them. If they are, she gives them vague directions to Camp Jupiter and sends them off to fend for themselves in the wild.

RANKING SYSTEMS

The entirety of Camp Jupiter, as well as New Rome, make up what is called the Fulminata ('armed with lightning') or Twelfth Legion. It was originally founded by Julius Caesar (legacy of Venus) and is currently the only standing legion of the Roman Army. The Twelfth Legion's standard is a golden eagle imbued with lightning that was granted to them by Jupiter.

There are various ranks a person can achieve in the Fulminata. Here is a short list:
  • Probatio - the lowest rank. Campers are said to be on probatio until they either perform an act of valor/great service to the Legion or complete one year of training at camp.
  • Legionnaire - any person who has come off probatio and is now a full-fledged member of the legion.
  • Centurion - Two Centurions, similar to Counselors at Camp Half-Blood, run each cohort of campers. They are elected to their positions and also attend Senate.
  • Senator - The Senators of Camp Jupiter are the Centurions, Praetors, and occasionally other campers who come together to discuss and work out problems the Legion may suffer. Campers are elected to this position.
  • Augur - Augurs are similar to Oracles in that they interpret omens and occasionally may have the gift of prophecy in some form. The augurs at Camp Jupiter practice haruspication, the act of divination by examining entrails of animals, but they use stuffed animals instead of dead ones.
  • Praetor - Praetors are the elected leaders of the legion. There are two praetors at all times.

Lodging at Camp Jupiter is separated into five cohorts. Unlike the cabins of Camp Half-Blood, members of a cohort do not have to come from the same godly parent. Instead, entry to a cohort depends on how good your letters of reccomendation are. You can get letters from a mortal parent, a godly parent, a former camper, or all of the above. Campers with the most letters of reccomendation are placed in the First Cohort, and campers with no letters are placed in the Fifth Cohort.

ODDS AND ENDS

At Camp Jupiter, the main form of camp-wide training was the war games. They were played in the Field of Mars. Common games include Deathball, Siege, Gladiator Fighting, and Chariot Racing.

Goat-men at Camp Jupiter are known as fauns, and they are not treated with respect like satyrs are at Camp Half-Blood. Fauns are often beggars, and many Romans wonder if they are capable of intelligent thoughts.

Romans are unfamiliar with the concept of Iris-Messaging. Instead, they use golden automaton eagles who 'print' messages to other campers.
